Transportation and infrastructure

Greater Bergen is a hub for the region’s transportation networks. It allows for easy access throughout the region and serves as a nexus for industry, commerce and tourism.

The region’s transportation system consists of a major airport, multiple ports and docks, a light rail, and a network of railway lines, highways and roads. In addition, Bergen - like most Norwegian urban centres- offers a number of pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly paths.

Bergen Airport

Bergen Airport Flesland is western Norway’s key airport, as well as Norway’s second largest. The airport has undergone significant growth in recent years, resulting in an increased passenger capacity.

With multiple carriers operating out of Bergen, the airport offers flights to nearly 40 different destinations all over Scandinavia and Europe. In addition, it has begun flights to and from New York/Newark, allowing for direct transatlantic travel.

The Port of Bergen

The Port of Bergen is Norway’s second largest port and the most important maritime hub in western Norway. It facilitates efficient and eco-friendly maritime commerce and transport, servicing many industries vital to both the region and Norway as a whole.

The Port of Bergen handles all types of cargo and offers the most cost-effective alternative for distributing goods to, from and throughout western Norway. The port at Mongstad Industrial Park is also the biggest supply base for offshore installations in the North Sea.

Bergen is also one of the most popular cruise destinations in Northern Europe. It serves as a ferry connection with neighbouring Denmark and is the starting point for cruises operated by Hurtigruten.

With plans to relocate the Port of Bergen to a new, sustainable, state-of-the-art port, the area will undergo immense development, transforming it into a new epicentre for the ocean industries.

The Bergen Light Rail

The Bergen Light Rail is the heart of urban travel throughout the city. It is one of the most commonly used forms of urban transportation, offering a safe, sustainable, and eco-friendly option.

It runs from Bergen’s city centre to Bergen Airport directly. The light rail will continue to expand throughout the city.

Both the Light Rail and local bus network can help you travel throughout Bergen, discovering activities for everyone to enjoy.

Buses

Bergen has a comprehensive bus service - Skyss. It operates throughout the city, offering convenient public transportation. The bus fleet includes over 100 electric buses, running on 100% renewable energy. In addition to servicing the region’s public transportation needs, it also contributes to reducing urban emissions from cars, as well as contributes to the region’s overall ambitions of reducing carbon emissions.

A regional bus service offers routes between Bergen and other cities.

Trains

Norway has a highly developed rail network. The Bergen Line (Bergensbane) is a vital part of this network, connecting Greater Bergen with central and eastern Norway. This contributes to the region’s trade and communications.

Also, it provides one of the most beautiful journeys throughout the fjords of western Norway. Tourists can enjoy a scenic 6-hour train ride between Bergen and Oslo, experiencing much of the region’s breathtaking beauty.
