Various Solutions Key to Shipping Decarbonisation

The Maritime Hybrid, Electric and Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference was concluded in Bergen after three successful days. A number of key insights and projections on shipping decarbonisation were shared.

This three-day conference brought together leaders and innovators in the global shipping industry. They spoke on a number of themes related to maritime decarbonisation and zero-emissions technologies – hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel-cell technologies, to name a few.

As the home of the ocean industries, Greater Bergen has a well-established reputation as a shipping hub. It is home to two industry clusters, a well-cultivated knowledge base, a highly skilled labour force and a diverse ecosystem of private firms, public sector organisations and research institutes.

Key takeaways

Decarbonising the shipping industry was at the top of this year’s agenda. During the course of the conference, multiple references were made to the Poseidon Principles and the European Union’s Fit for 55 package.

One key takeaway was the importance of a diverse range of green fuels and propulsion systems, citing the need for multiple alternatives. To this end, many of the firms present reaffirmed their ambitions to continue investing in various green, zero-emission technologies and innovations.

  • Geir Bjørkeli, Corvus Energy CEO, who took part in a panel discussion on how to accelerate decarbonisation
  • Ivan Østvik, Norled Project Manager, who spoke on the MF Hydra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered ferry
  • Siv Remøy-Vangen, Maritime Bergen CEO, who touched on the opportunities for hybrid and electric solutions in deep-sea shipping
  • Nils Møllerup, Port of Bergen Commercial Manager, who spoke on future ambitions for the port
