Report from ONS 2024: A region leading the way in innovation and growth
The conference, held in Stavanger, is one of the world's most influential energy events, with more than 60 000 visitors.
Hydrogen; powering the future
The Western region’s thriving industries were clearly present as a prime region for green hydrogen and energy infrastructure.
At the conference, representatives from Greater Bergen highlighted several ongoing and upcoming green hydrogen projects, which have already attracted significant interest from international companies, finding their fit in the value chains. These projects aim to supply clean hydrogen to both domestic industries and export markets, reinforcing Norway’s commitment to becoming a global leader in renewable energy. With the world moving towards cleaner energy solutions, Vestland is uniquely positioned to lead in green hydrogen production, thanks to its abundant renewable energy resources.
- Green hydrogen is the future, and Vestland is ready to lead the way. We have the resources, the expertise, and the political will to make Vestland a major player in the global hydrogen economy, said Jon Askeland, Mayor of Vestland County, when opening the Vestland pavilion.
Several companies from Greater Bergen were exhibting at the Vestland county pavillion. County mayor Jon Askeland proudly opened the ball.
Increased interest in offshore wind
Another major highlight of ONS 2024 was the unveiling of several new offshore wind projects in Vestland, signalling the region's growing prominence in this sector.
- Vestland offers some of the best conditions for offshore wind development in the world. Our deep waters, strong winds, and proximity to Europe make Vestland an ideal location for investors looking to capitalize on the renewable energy boom, said Marit Warncke, CEO of Bergen Næringsråd (Bergen Chamber of Commerce and Industry), during a keynote session.
Huge opportunities for new players
ONS 2024 also highlighted the critical need for investment in energy infrastructure to support the growing renewable energy sector. With the region's energy capacity set to expand significantly in the coming years, there is a pressing need for enhanced grid infrastructure, energy storage solutions, and innovative technologies to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply. This is a clear invitation to foreign companies who can fill the gap in the value chains we are building.
Politicians and industry leaders from Greater Bergen companies emphasized that investing in energy infrastructure is not only crucial for supporting new projects but also for securing the region’s long-term sustainability and resilience. Companies from various industries were encouraged to explore opportunities in an area which promises steady returns as the demand for renewable energy continues to rise.
Why Greater Bergen?
The Western part of Norway is brimming with opportunity. The region’s unique combination of natural resources, strategic location, and supportive political environment makes it an ideal destination for investors looking to be at the forefront of the global energy transition.
