Fantastic day in Greater Bergen for Serge Buy (left). Here together with the ones behind the brand new electric ferry Husavik: Håvard Frøland, Corvus; Stein Ruben Larsen, Norwegian Electric System and Lars Conradi Andersen from Havyard.

Looking for clean ferry solutions

Canada is looking for the state of the art when it comes to zero emission solutions for ferries. Serge Buy from the Canadian Ferry Association (CFA) found answers in Greater Bergen.

When Buy visited the region, one of the things he found was the brand new zero emission ferry Husavik used in the crossing between Stord and Austevoll.

He was impressed when given a tour of the ferry’s machinery and guided around the bridge. He also noticed the silence that comes from using an electrical engine, compared to diesel.

Things are moving in Canada

Canada is now moving into the electric ferry age, and Buy believes that Canadian firms can learn a great deal from Norwegian ferry companies.

“I’m gathering information to all my member companies. They are eager to know more about new technology and how everything is functioning in Norway,” says Buy.

Ferry routes in Canada can be very long, with some lasting up to 16 hours. It’s impossible to use electricity for such journeys, so the Canadians are also looking into hydrogen.

Buy notes that that it’s impossible for the 43 member companies in the CFA to keep up with the rapid technological progress happening across Europe. For this reason, he is touring the continent in search of the best solutions.

He was impressed by how far the Norwegian industry has come in developing electrical solutions, and by the cooperation between companies.

During his one-day stay in Bergen he met with Havyard, Wärtsilä, Corvus, Norwegian Electric Systems and LMG Marin.
