Join Us for One Ocean Week

Bergen will be the stage for Norway’s first-ever One Ocean Week (Apr. 15-21). Beginning with the return of the research vessel Statsraad Lehmkuhl, the city will host an entire week of wide-ranging ocean sustainability-themed events, conferences and activities.

One Ocean Week will be the first annual event of its kind. It will raise awareness of key issues relating to the sustainable use of the oceans, marine environments and their resources.

His Majesty King Harald will be in attendance to officially kick off One Ocean Week with the return of the Statsraad Lehmkuhl. As part of the One Ocean Expedition, the vessel is expected to make landfall on Apr. 15 after a nearly two-year circumnavigation of the globe.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon will also be in attendance. He is expected to officially open the "Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Ocean" conference. Hosted by the Institute of Marine Research, the event will bring together 600 experts from nearly 70 different countries.

"We will show the world what a real welcoming party looks like," promised Bergen Mayor Linn Kristin Engø.

"We are creating a fantastic week in Bergen, the eyes of the world will be directed here. It will be the world’s most important arena for everything that relates to the world oceans,” said Vestland County Mayor Jon Askeland.

Bringing together key individuals and groups from the region’s ocean industries, One Ocean Week will be a "meeting place for debate and the exchange of experiences related to a sustainable use of the ocean". Throughout the week, there will be discussions on key topics, knowledge-sharing opportunities and presentations on new ocean innovations. The majority of the activities and events will be open to the general public.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Bergen City Council Leader Rune Bakervik and other key figures will also be among the esteemed guests attending the week’s events and festivities.

One Ocean Week is a collaboration between Ocean City Bergen and external partners, with support from both the Municipality of Bergen and the Vestland County Council. Ocean City Bergen is an initiative made up of private- and public-sector organisations working to cultivate sustainable growth and value creation throughout the region’s ocean industries.
