Future industries

The Greater Bergen region is a hub for maritime industry and renewables. The Ocean Odessey gives you a chance to be updated on several of these projects, including the world’s first open-source CO2 transport and storage infrastructure in the project Northern Lights in Øygarden. The Northern Lights project will officially be opened in 2024.

The program will also cover offshore wind and the business possibilities opening up for sustainable industrial development in the Ocean Industries.

At the Ocean Odessey the marine history meets the marine future. The venue is the historic and stunning ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl. Today she is Norway’s largest and oldest square rigged sailing ship and also the oldest amongst the large square riggers in operation today.  The ship was built in 1914 in Germany and is a 3-masted steel bark, built as a training ship for the German merchant marine. Her original name was Grossherzog Friedrich August, but in 1921 the Norwegian politician Kristofer Lehmkuhl purchased her from England. She was then put into service as a sail training vessel under the Norwegian flag from 1923. Mr Lehmkuhl played an important role in the dissolution of the union Norway and Sweeden in 1905, and as a courtesy to his efforts, the name was at that time changed into Statsraad Lehmkuhl.
