Invest in Bergen helps startup to find new partners

Maffei’s company, Coral Solutions, is using artificial intelligence (AI) in order to rethink the way products are designed. Invest in Bergen has helped this innovative startup company to identify new partners in the Bergen region.

The company is now aiming to become a “design powerhouse” within the next few years.

Coral Solutions was established in 2019 by Maffei and his co-founder Iver Finne.

Maffei explains that their aim is to use AI to deliver products that are more lightweight, efficient and climate-friendly.

“With the help of AI and 3D-printing technology, we can design parts with less mass and volume. This will contribute to cutting fuel costs and reducing carbon emissions from vehicles such as cars and ships,” he explains.

The entrepreneurs contacted Invest in Bergen in April this year, as they were looking to expand their network and find new opportunities in Greater Bergen.

Our team was able to put them in contact with local organizations including the GCE Ocean Technology business cluster and the Ocean Innovation Norwegian Catapult Centre. Coral Solutions went on to become a member of GCE Ocean Technology, and has since closed two new partnerships.

The first is with a member of the cluster, Additech, specialized in industrial metal 3D‑printing and rapid prototyping, and the second is with nTopology, the world leading software company in implicit modelling design.

Since joining GCE Ocean Technology, Coral Solutions has also added a mechanical technologist to their team, Sigmund Berge. The team is now looking at how they can gain even more value from being a member of the cluster.

“We see that there are further benefits that we can realize by being a part of this environment,” Berge says. “This includes using the cluster’s testing facilities, which are offered to members at a discounted rate.”

Building a design powerhouse

Coral Solutions may be a young company, but it has some ambitious goals for the future.

“Within the next three to five years, we want to be a design powerhouse in Scandinavia,” says Maffei.

He explains that the company was originally focused on the ocean industries, but has since branched out into the medical sector. The founders are in talks with a major producer of medical equipment that is interested in collaboration.

“Our goal is to use innovative methods to solve problems,” he concludes. “We want to apply the latest technologies to make industrial design better.”

With the help of Bergen’s business ecosystem, including organizations such as Invest in Bergen and GCE Ocean Technology, they are now closer to realizing this vision.
