CCS & Blue Hydrogen Advancing in Greater Bergen

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and blue hydrogen production are underway to become key contributors to Norway’s decarbonisation goals and energy transition.

Invest in Bergen was on hand for a tour of the Northern Lights Visitor Centre and a brief glimpse of the site of the future hydrogen production plant on Wednesday. Both are located at Kollsnes, a natural gas processing plant in Øygarden municipality, in Greater Bergen.

The Bergen region’s long history in the petroleum sector will be crucial in developing both CCS & blue hydrogen production. Along with its key infrastructure and facilities (including CCB Energy Park in Kollsnes), the region is home to a highly innovative labour force, comprehensive knowledge bases and a network of collaborative firms.

The Northern Lights Visitor Centre was officially opened in October 2022. Commemorating the event, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre underscored the overall value of the Northern Lights project.

"CCS is a key factor in reaching our climate goals and the Northern Lights project is groundbreaking for the decarbonisation of European heavy industry," said Prime Minister Støre.

Once operational in 2024, the Northern Lights project will be "the first-ever cross-border, open source, CO2 transport and storage infrastructure". Serving as the transportation and storage component of Norway’s Longship project, Northern Lights will contribute toward cultivating a complete CCS value chain, as well as offering this as a service.
