Blue Mussel Feed Project Receives Funding

A collaborative sustainability project in Norwegian food production recently received funding from the Research Council of Norway. It will swap test and prototype verify the use of Blue Mussels as a potential feed ingredient in poultry farming.

With its long ocean history, Greater Bergen has been a key centre for the Norwegian seafood and aquaculture industries. With a wealth of natural resources and complete value chains, these industries are now working to find new innovations to promote sustainability and reduce their carbon footprint.

The collaboration partners for this project are Fiskå Mølle, Lerøy Ocean Forest, Eide Fjordbruk, Norforsk, Nortura, Animalia and Land Meets Ocean.

“Norwegian food should be produced using Norwegian resources. Norway is rich in biomaterials, which can allow us to be exporters rather than importers of raw materials. Blue Mussels provide such an opportunity, and we are incredibly happy to be able to continue this project with the assistance of the Research Council of Norway,” said Fiskå Mølle Project Manager Hilde Schøyen.

Blue Mussels as a feed ingredient

Blue Mussel shells have shown unique properties, making them an ideal feed ingredient with immense potential. They can filter seawater along the coast, efficiently absorbing carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. In addition, they are a rich source of protein, making them a suitable alternative for imported feed materials.

Studies have shown that they can be used as a natural feed ingredient in poultry, pig, and salmon farming.

Partners across the value chain

This project is a result of “Land Meets Ocean”– a multi-industry initiative aimed at driving innovation, industrial growth, circularity and decarbonisation across the agriculture, aquaculture, and seafood industries. The project is financed and organised by industry clusters NCE Seafood Innovation, NCE Blue Legasea, Biotech North and NCE Heidner Biocluster.

The collaborative partners for the Blue Mussel Feed project represent firms from across the entire seafood value chain. These industrial actors, from production to market, are cooperating to overcome key challenges that may arise during this innovation project.

“Through cooperation, we can mitigate the individual risks for each company and overcome any obstacles while scaling,” said Elise Sæle Dahle, Land Meets Ocean Project Developer.
