Being a hub for several key Norwegian industries, Greater Bergen is likely to be a key contributor to this “green wave”. The region offers key infrastructure, a wealth of skilled labour, a highly developed knowledgebase and modern transportation networks. With these assets in place, the region is well underway towards transitioning into a green hub.

“The experience gained from the petroleum industry gives Vestland a competitive advantage in the green transition that is underway,” said Sonbø. “Now that the oil and gas activity is going down, we have to use the expertise here in the west to meet the transition. We want green business growth and to cut emissions, but at the same time, we want to increase the export of goods. Thus, we must take advantage of our expertise and everything we have learned over the years”.

Many possibilities

The region has been active in cultivating competence networks with many of the educational institutions throughout the region. According to Sondbø, these networks will be crucial in cultivating a labour force for these new green industries.

“We are keen to train a qualified workforce with the right knowledge who are ready to meet the challenges we face, including in floating offshore wind, where there is great export potential. This will be a massive investment in the coming years, where the government has announced the first call for tenders for early next year”.
