Digitalisation has changed the way the world consumes news. With today’s media landscape constantly evolving, innovative and sophisticated digital tools are being produced almost daily.

The region’s highly developed digital infrastructure has laid the groundwork for immense innovation and creativity.

Hub for media and media technology

At the heart of this is the Media Cluster. Located in Media City Bergen, it serves as a leading international hub for media and media technology innovation. It includes an excellent media lab, a business development incubator and one of Europe’s most modern TV studios.

Along its value chain, you’ll find innovative media technology firms, leading local and national media outlets, and foremost universities and research institutes. As the media and technology landscape continues to evolve, this has, and will continue to provide plenty of opportunities for both pioneering research and rewarding collaboration.

To date, these activities have generated over NOK 16 billion in annual turnover. This collaboration has contributed to knowledge-building, innovation, and growth. The NCE Media Cluster is and has been an important part of the great environment in Media City Bergen.

Greater Bergen holds many investment opportunities and offers an excellent environment for media tech companies.

Business opportunities

Bergen is home to a highly digitised, multifaceted media and technology ecosystem. Comprising over 100 news outlets, research institutions and private firms, this network is ripe with collaborative opportunities.

Media Lab

A key driver for Bergen’s media landscape has been the MCB Media Lab. This workspace provides cluster members with the means to research, develop and test new digital products and services.

Offering access to digital platforms, a workshop area, cutting-edge tools and more, it is a crucial apparatus for boosting media research and tech innovation.

Network of incubators and accelerators

Aiming to help cluster members scale and develop ideas into final products, the media cluster offers access to Mediekuben.

As Norway’s only start-up environment for the media and media technology sectors, it provides access to mentors, advisors, and support from a vast network of global incubators and accelerators.

Next-gen media technologies

With media technologies evolving at an unprecedented rate, the media cluster works to steer Norway towards the future.

AI and big data are among the key focus areas for the cluster. To this end, it launched the Norwegian Cognitive Center with cluster member IBM. This collaborative, cross-sector initiative works to strengthen AI infrastructure and competence. 5G technology – a game-changer for global communication and data transmission – is another focus area. With the formation of the Nordic 5G Consortium, this cluster of Nordic media companies works to provide insight and resources, as well as support the development of new 5G products and services.
